SHIRE is one of 35 organizations approved by DC Health Link to help DC residents get insurance they can afford. In SHIRE’s view, the District’s decision to engage a network of trusted organizations that have deep roots in communities has solid potential for success. SHIRE is excited to be part of this effort and we are committed to help everyone in DC get affordable health coverage.
There are 42,000 individuals in the District with no health insurance. They include young adults no longer covered by their parents. They may also include self-employed individuals or part-time employees who cannot get insurance on their job. Other people needing help may not be old enough for Medicare or they have incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid.
Through the Affordable Care Act and DC Health Link, everyone in the District who needs it can get help. Residents may quality for private health insurance and they may be able to receive financial support to lower insurance costs. They may also get help to apply for Medicaid. Enrollees have their choice of health plans, but every policy must provide basic benefits to cover care they need to get and stay healthy. Enrollment has started and coverage will take effect on January 1, 2014.
SHIRE’s team of In-Person Assisters (IPAs) is made up of individuals who are experienced and well known in our community. Curtis Watkins, Candice Hammonds and Patricia Faggett are certified by DC Health Link to enroll DC residents, having each completed 30 hours of training. They offer information and enrollment support without cost to anyone who needs it.
